Chapter Fifteen

Thursday

Jules dropped her purse on the desk and headed for the coffee machine as Bijou ran to greet Roxanne.

“You’re in late this morning. Rough night?” Roxanne picked up Bijou and gave her a treat from her stash in her desk.

“No. Pixel and Jake came over for dinner. And then Jake and I binge-watched a bunch of Fatal Impressions. Now, I’m dying to see what happens with this season.”

Before Roxanne could comment, they heard the front screen door open and heavy footsteps on the wooden floor. Bijou yipped and tore through the open door to the store.

“Hey, Bijou,” Sheriff Hobbs said. “Where’s everybody?”

“Back here, Matt,” Roxanne called.

The sheriff stepped through the open doorway. “Morning, y’all. How’re things?” He leaned over and kissed Roxanne. “Good to see you.”

“You, too. It’s been a while. Anything new going on?”

“Jules texted me that she found a note in Poppy’s house.”

“Oh, I put it on your desk.” Jules walked over and picked up the white envelope. “I was packing Poppy’s things, and it fell out of a book on her nightstand. It looked like a love note. I didn’t know if it meant anything to you.”

“We’ll see. We don’t want to discount anything yet.”

“Oh, and something odd happened yesterday. Again, I don’t know if this is anything, either. I was showing my friend Pixel around the set, and we stopped by the tents near the barn. When I was flipping through the pictures, I noticed something looked odd in one of them. We were under one of the tents, and Chavis and Rod were arguing over some script changes.”

“Send it to me.” Seconds later, the sheriff’s phone dinged, and he looked at the picture.

“You may have to enlarge it. Look at Chavis’s hand,” Jules directed.

“Hmmm. Might be just a prop, but probably worth looking into,” he said.

“I don’t remember seeing a knife when we were under the tent. And I don’t know if he took it with him or left it on the table.” Jules tugged on the hem of her sweater.

“How would you characterize his interaction with Rod?” Sheriff Hobbs asked, pulling out a small black notebook and pen from his shirt pocket.

“It was heated, but not threatening. Rod put his foot down about the changes Chavis wanted. He was clear there would be no alterations.”

“Okay. I’ll let the team know. They’re working round the clock on both murders.”

Roxanne looked up at the sheriff. Before she could speak, Jules asked, “Do you think Jayden really killed Sorbonne?”

The sheriff hesitated. “Don’t breathe a word of this to anyone. No. I think we may cut him loose soon. A witness said she saw him near Sorbonne’s house. So far, we have no other concrete evidence or witness accounts. According to his phone records, he was on a call to a friend in California until about two-thirty the next morning. His friend and the phone records verified his alibi.”

Jules plopped down on her desk. Her knees felt weak. This confirms her gut feeling that someone set up Jayden.
